When will my baby start talking?

My daughter is 16 months old and she hasn't said her first word yet.. Just like other mums I have subscribe and member of famous baby and pregnancy websites like Bounty,Emma's diary. As a result I do receive automatically monthly email about child's development and stage of growth. Last month when I received email it says my baby should be saying at least 10 words.. I got panic my daughter hasn't start saying a word yet. So I decided to look for help. I discussed with my children center and health visitors they assured me that there is nothing to be worry about most of the children start talking after 18 months even some children direct start using small sentences. I even checked online for professional opinions. Here are some useful information I would like to share with all readers.

Communication and language:

Communication and language has three stages, Listening, Understanding and Speaking. As long as your child respond to your voice and understand simple instructions like come, sit down, pick your toy etc then it means their is no fear of child's hearing and understanding now when it comes to speaking then up to  2 years old you can try but if the child reach to 2 years old you will need definitely help from professionals. Here in England health visitors are the right people to discuss. So do not keep your fear to yourself discuss with them over the phone or by visiting them. And please do not assume and lay back as well its always best to keep up your knowledge and confusions with professionals.

Who is a “Late Talker”?

A “Late Talker” is a toddler (between 18-30 months) who has good understanding of language, typically developing play skills, motor skills, thinking skills, and social skills, but has a limited spoken vocabulary for his or her age. The difficulty late talking children have is specifically with spoken or expressive language.  This group of children can be very puzzling because they have all of the building blocks for spoken language, yet they don’t talk or talk very little.

Researchers have yet to agree upon an explanation for this specific delay. They have determined, though, that Late Talkers are more likely to have a family history of early language delay, to be male, and to have been born at less than 85% of their optimal birth weight or at less than 37 weeks gestation [1]. It has also been determined that approximately 13% of two year olds are late talkers.

Encourage your child to talk:

It is important that as a parent or carer we should encourage our child to talk. Sometimes when we are too busy in oird aily routine we unknowingly missed out ont he focus on our little one who needs our attention. So if your child is reaching 18 months and not talking you have to make some efforts.
  • Talk to them and focus on words, for example when is dinner time ask your toddler lets come have "dinner" repeat word dinner two three time while making their plate you will see your child will watch you carefully they might or might not try to copy you but for them watching you and listening is very important.
  • Read them books. Even showing them pictures is a good idea. One word focus is important like you read them a story focus on pictures and point them "star" "moon" they will point at them and look at you. Make it routine once or twice a day. They will start showing you interest and will start babbling when you point at the pictures.
  • Pay attention to them when they say something or make any sound pay attention praise them and show them you are listening.
  • "Repeat back what you hear your toddler trying to say to you, even if she doesn't say it clearly. Expand on what she says. So if your toddler says "nana" when she wants a banana, you could say "Yes, here's a banana."

Don't worry too much about how your toddler pronounces her words. It's more important that she feels that what she says adds to the conversation or that what she is trying to express has been understood. "

Warning Signs of a Possible Problem

If you're concerned about your child's speech and language development, there are some things to watch for. An infant who isn't responding to sound or who isn't vocalizing is of particular concern.
Between 12 and 24 months, reasons for concern include a child who:
  • isn't using gestures, such as pointing or waving bye-bye, by 12 months
  • prefers gestures over vocalizations to communicate at 18 months
  • has trouble imitating sounds by 18 months
  • has difficulty understanding simple verbal requests
Seek an evaluation if a child over 2 years old:
  • can only imitate speech or actions and doesn't produce words or phrases spontaneously
  • says only certain sounds or words repeatedly and can't use oral language to communicate more than his or her immediate needs
  • can't follow simple directions
  • has an unusual tone of voice (such as raspy or nasal sounding)
  • is more difficult to understand than expected for his or her age. Parents and regular caregivers should understand about half of a child's speech at 2 years and about three quarters at 3 years. By 4 years old, a child should be mostly understood, even by people who don't know the child.

How to encourage my little one to play

As a parent we love to watch our children playing happily First rule of play is your  little one is fed and had their sleep then only their mind will be open to explore and play. Here are some tips might help you to encourage your little one to play:
Suitable Toys:
Age group matters a lot when you provide them selection of toys or activity. You need to make sure they are able to play with them or in other words toys should be suitable for their age.
I have seen grown ups offering a big rattle to 2 months old baby who can't  even hold it . Yeah we can rattle it for them but they cannot play with it by themselves. For younger babies soft and light toys or bright color toys or handkerchiefs are best or mobiles above their cot or play mats are very interesting for little one as they enjoy watching something hanging and rotating or making sound.. If you are too much confuse so when you go to toys shop look at the age group describe on the label of toys that will give you clear indication if it is suitable or not .
Sometimes we have a box of toys but our 2 years old toddler is not interesting because the toys  are too basic for them and they want something more exploring and interesting. So choose toys suitable for their age or shop around get the ideas what is suitable for their age and provide or create similar play activities for them.
Household items children like to play: Its not necessary you buy the whole shop for child suitable for each stage of their life. It has been seen often that children play with a new toy for a week and then just forget about it or loose interest. Buying new toys is not an option for everyone. It is always best to create something what is already available. Like children like to play with original home use items as they see their grown up using them so they are curious. Best for you give them some steel bowls and wooden spoons to play with they enjoy banging and lining them around , you can add some old rice or pasta for them to mix ,feel and pretend to cook.It will keep your toddler well occupied. And if you have children between 2 to 5 these ideas are best , add some more variety in it let them use water and poring plastic jugs and cups and let them have their teddy bear picnic in the corner of your room. You will be amazed how children use their imagination.
Or give them to dress u their old clothes, hats, handbags hair clips etc. They try to put it on them or they dress up their existing teddy bears or dolls. Not only girls even boys like to dress up and use their imagination to be  a super hero or something.

Outdoor play: If you have good weather take them out in the garden let them have some outdoor play. Or simply take them to the park. Children will play good 2 or 3 hours and use up their energy when you will be back all of you will be fresh and happy. Outdoor play is very important for their physical development, And they do not get bored outdoor very quick. It will help them to stay calm for rest of the day as they have used up lots of energy in running around. Even if its just kicking  a ball or playing chase.

Changing toys:If your child is not playing with some of the toys pack them away and take them out when you think they are bored with new ones .In other words swap the toys occasionally. It will occupy them and change of toys will give them excitement. Sometime when they grow a bit older and you bring their old baby toys they use their pretend games with them.Like pretend a rattle is a magic stick etc.Or you can help them to imagine or pretend play.
Get involve: Your involvement makes a big difference.Sometimes children do like their grown ups to be involved. It doesn't mean that you have to play with them for too long. Just share some ideas and play a bit and soon they will be in their play mood. For example a bag of building blocks in the corner of your room but your child shows no interest in it. So while you want to watch your tv program or drink tea. Take bag out and build a structure ask your child come and join you and soon they will be next to you making their own houses or structures. In 5 minutes time you move around they wont even notice but they do need your appreciation.
Stay engage: Some times children do play by themselves longer but sometime your engagement is necessary. Suppose they are playing to make something or pretending to be someone just ask them randomly What are they doing?or wow its great, that's a brilliant idea, what is this your two minutes questions will encourage them to play longer and make them feel happy , confident and proud.

Why I love Britain? (As a woman.).

I Love Britain! Yes I am earned British Citizen and I am proud to say I love Britain.,
I have my own reasons to love Britain . When I came to this country I had experienced my life as a women in two famous cultures,Asian and Arabic. I don't want to name the countries as I do respect them as one is my birth place and the other where I grew up. But when I came this country I dare to look at life in different way. I realized being a woman doesn't mean I have to be dependent, Being a women doesn't mean I can be abused by dominating partners, Being a women doesn't mean in the name of respect I handed over my rights to others who do not respect me or love me.

Its hurtful but its THE TRUTH of woman's life no matter they deny it or try to justify their life style. In Arab. Few things I have experienced were: I was not allowed to drive a vehicle, I was not allowed to rent a place where I do not have a male family member. Not only this in case of abuse I do not have a right to seek help from police as its a family matter. I even witness a case of a women been murdered by her partner in arguments yeah the person was jailed and justice been done finally...But 35 years of marriage life the woman had suffered a lot of pain according to her parents statement. Its very sad  if she would have any support in living culture I bet she would have been alive or at least not been abused. Women is dependent on man and if the man of her life do not mercy her she is helpless..these are some basics. Usually girls are married by the age of 20 .There is a change in women education last few years but women job opportunity is very limited as per CNN ""Lack of protection for women at work and harassment are among the factors that keep women out of the workplace." usually women are not much encouraged to go higher education according to Nawar Al-Hassan Golley, American University of Sharjah :
"For many girls school is their only opportunity to socialize outside the family."

In Asia women is a burden the day she is born. There are so many cases that people attempt abortion if they find out that they will be having a fourth female child.
"abort the daughter, try for a son. In China and northern India more than 120 boys are being born for every 100 girls. Nature dictates that slightly more males are born than females to offset boys' greater susceptibility to infant disease. But nothing on this scale." http://www.economist.com/node/15606229

They keep on having children until they gets a boy and if not the wife keep giving birth regardless of her her health. In some areas they do accept a child as a girl but they still consider them as burden because when a girl grows up her parents has to find a groom for her and give dowry and fulfill her in laws demand through out their life. When its come to marriage an ordinary girls face so much critical comments about herself that some time she might never think of like height, skin color, hair, voice etc things she is born with things she never have control on she is been judged and pushed into  inferiority complex  for the rest of her life that sometime she  even forgets to smile.
Well there is so much to say but this is just a glimpse what I have observed and felt.

Being a parent!!

Once you become a parent automatically your whole life style changes. How? have a look:

  • Outings: Wow love to go out somewhere.. But wait! lets think..if you are going holiday or just a day out trip, you will consider options like children or baby facilities, stuff you need to pack even if its a four hour outing, some snack for children, their sleep routine should not be disturb if  you have toddlers you need to make sure extra pair of clothes and spares bag , buggy, rain cover (British weather is unpredictable usually)blanket or jumper it might get cold before we come back .Or shall we go and have some  fun.. lets sort out someone for baby sit, we do need to provide detail and essentials even if we are leaving children to grand ma or a child minder so you need to arrange at least a week ahead for someone to look after your children while you are out.. .
  • Budget: Can you cover your outings with in a budget? going with children or going without children?  Forget it lets go have a lunch outside..Going restaurant ?.. good.. But wait ...will all children be happy with the food or do we need to buy one burger from McDonald's before going to restaurant of our choice? If you have a toddler do we have baby facilities?..Couldn't find the carer last minute.. Lets forget about it..Just get a take away..
  • Cinema: Yeah sounds good  but  wait!!will movie be  suitable for children? or we need to consider carer option? hmmm cant afford this time.. lets forget about it...
Oh NO... I am not putting you off from parenting... Its just some example how parenting can effect our life style. But there is something that you are blessed with and noting can replace it.. Your child!! Yes when the little eyes with a question look at you feel it.. The true love form your child without any expectation for them you mean world to them if you smile they smile, if you are sad they are confused. Look at them their little mischief might stress you out at  times but once they sleep and you have an hour to recharge your energy that mischief  make you smile and become a last long memory for you that even when you get old you recall it and smile. Like that day I was laying table my toddler wanted to help and helped herself by picking a bowl of yogurt and walked down to the table dripping yogurt all the way from kitchen to the dinning room.. Oh yes... you know how exactly I felt that time... but now when I recall this moment  it makes me smile..
Being a parent you physically and emotionally can not hate your child even if you lose something you ready to forget and forgive  and you might felt anger but their will be  always love mix feeling at the same time..which you only can feel if you are a parent.
You are blessed with a child... So feel it and enjoy it, save their childhood  in your life time memory. You will be amazed that you don't remember much about yourself how much you will remember about your CHILD..

Is Adoption the only way to make someones life?

"Adoption is a legal process which permanently gives parental rights to adoptive parents. Adoption means taking a child into your home as a permanent family member. It means caring for and guiding children through their growing years and giving them the love and understanding they need to develop their full potential"childsworld
Well adoption has two sides.. one from birth parents who decided to give away because they lose hope that they can not meet child's need and their blood is better off with out them. It could be financial reasons, circumstances or illness. In the time of child's birth they are totally helpless and give up on their child. For the child's sake they handed over them to adopted agencies or adopted parents.
But their is the toughest decision they have to make that is legally they will have no right over their child ever again.
On the other side for adopted parents view they try to build up a child's life whose parents have given up and try to give love, care and support for the child .Their intentions are good .Some adopted parents are those who biological can not have children so they adopt a needy child and give them their name and new life.
Now as a parent my question is , is it fair on child? what if the child's birth parents get chances in future and come out of crisis but they have lost their
rights on their child for ever (though there is some openness to contact them but not legally rights to get them back). Would they dont have pain of losing their blood? Bond with birth child s is unbreakable and feelings, love and emotions can never be changed.
Now third the most important being in adoption is  a CHILD.. what are the effect of adoption on a child who is been adopted.Soon or later they find out that they are been adopted. They suffer from loss and grief, self esteem, confusion in identity development..(link:https://www.childwelfare.gov/pubpdfs/f_adimpact.pdf)Its very painful to face the reality of life. They question themselves why it has to be them.No matter how good life they have been given then too they will be curious about their birth family and relations. They will have the feeling of loss through out their life even they have been supported and understand the reasons of adoption. End of the day they are human and blood bond will remain the same. I am not saying they will not love their adopted parents they will respect them and be grateful to them but their always been a feeling of loss in their heart of been separated from their own family.
I fully agree in fact really appreciate to adopt if the child has lost their parents and become orphan and been adopted. But having birth parents alive and separated them from their family and possibly from siblings as well because their parents have given hope.. I find it a bit mean and sad.. Is there any other way? cant we help them by sponsoring them?  let them learn and grow in their own family?
Their is one more picture of adoption in the air "Adoption from abroad". Reasons are the same but their is a big confusion in  adopted child s life when a child is been adopted from a different region. We have seen western celebrities adopting children from African, or Zambia countries.  I would like to refer from "daily mail" article about Madonna adopting an abroad child.
Celebrities such as Madonna who adopt children from poor countries are doing more harm than good, researchers claimed yesterday.

They said that demand for children from wealthy Westerners means large numbers of families in the developing world are sending their children to orphanages in the hope that they will be adopted abroad.

The report by a team of psychologists from Liverpool University called for controls to curb international adoptions, stop the "market mechanism" affecting children, and "uphold child rights".

Their view is likely to upset couples in Britain who are trying to adopt children from overseas because of the difficulty of adopting a child in this country.

The study said that adoptions from abroad are too much of a trade and do harm to the children involved.

It said: "This process has been labelled the Madonna effect, so-called after the singer's adoption of a young boy from Zambia in 2006."

Study author Professor Kevin Browne said: "Some argue that international adoption is a solution to the large number of children in institutional care but we have found the opposite is true.
DailyMail
Now from the adopted child s side Would that child gets a normal life when they want to believe that their adopted parents are their parents? and when they go in society play with other children would they be questioned by other children about parents? how would you make little child's mind understand the reality of their  life?
Is it fair to adopt them or they better off fostering or sponsored? Well readers I leave it to you to decide.
